Apr 09, 2021 · Cris CrsonI don't write reviews, even when I'm unhappy, but this experience was just too much.I took time off to have my carpets and upholstery cleaned by the local Stanley Steamer branch prior to listing my house for sale. The office called multiple times to reschedule my afternoon appointment to a different day and then to a different time on a Friday. I had my house prepped and ready to go for an 830 am carpet cleaning appointment. When the staff showed up, I requested that they wear masks if they were unvaccinated. They stated they do not wear masks while cleaning and neither was vaccinated. I firmly reiterated that, as a healthcare worker (with high risk family members that I plan to visit soon), I was unwilling to compromise on this. They then agreed to wear masks but stated they needed to go to their van to find their masks. While sitting in our driveway, the crew called me back and stated that they didn't have any masks in their van and would have to reschedule. I asked if they could get masks and come right back. Initially they declined but then agreed when I explained my issues with timing. I then sat at home for over an hour without any updates from their team, even though their office was only 2 miles away and I presume they weren't sewing their masks in the meantime.I finally called their office for an update and was told by the manager that one of the crew has asthma and gets dizzy, so *neither* of them would wear masks if they came back. Since this is not medically sound reasoning, and one person with asthma does not excuse both of them from wearing masks, I stated that was not going to work and didn't match CDC guidelines for social distancing. She told me the crew was refusing to clean my carpets today and I could reschedule for 2 weeks from now but they would still not wear masks. The manager then told me that they have been in tons of houses, even dentists' and 80-90 year olds and they hadn't had a problem with it... Good for them. I prefer to appropriately social distance. I haven't seen my family in 18 months and I prefer not to potentially expose them when I finally do see them next week. Eventually she offered to see if the owner would be willing to come do it but again stated it would be a week or two.At this point, I had: been called to reschedule twice from my original afternoon appointment and had agreed to get up early as a courtesy to them; had made a reasonable request that my ground rules for my home be followed with regards to mask wearing; been lied to by the crew; not received any updates that they did not plan to return (I was told they had already moved on to the next job); and was now being told they would not attempt to accommodate me in a reasonable manner.I'm not going to lie, I lost my temper at this point and I groused. I groused like nobody's business. I'm generally reasonable, but after all of this I pulled out the stops and went full Karen. At this point the manager agreed to discuss it with the owner and crew and see what could be done.Meantime... my husband called 2 other carpet cleaning services who both agreed that this was complete nonsense. One agreed to come today and said that he and his crew had no problems wearing masks in the house during cleaning. When the manager called back and told me that the original crew would come back later today and would wear masks but "would have to take lots of breaks," I was happy to go with the alternative.TL,DR: social distancing and professional courtesy need not apply.Edited to add: It's worth noting that Sherri, the manager, called me personally just now, within an hour or so after I posted my original review, to apologize for our experience this morning. I am appreciative that she took the time to do this and think that in the context of several positive reviews, it says a lot about their overall willingness to work with people, so I am updating my review from 1 star to 3.
