Originally written Tuesday, July 1st, 2025:Back in September of 2024, I had a plumbing issue beneath my guest bathroom - roots had gotten into the pipes, causing a substantial clog. Roto-Rooter was quick to come out and get my issue fixed - a hole was excavated beneath my foundation, the pipe fitting was replaced, I paid something in the ballpark of $7000, and my toilet and bathtub worked as expected again. Minus the "having to deal with expensive plumbing issues" part, I was quite pleased.Now, after nine or so months, I've had roots climb into the exact same pipes. I had Roto-Rooter come back and give it a look, and they gave me an estimate for about $14,000. It included a lot more work than had previously been done, and a 5 year warranty that I requested specific written terms for and was told that there were none - and that's after claiming they'll fix the spot from last year (about six feet worth of excavation) for "free" and get me a 10% discount. As a homeowner, I've come to learn that if you're paying five digits, you should shop around if you can.I got a second quote for the equivalent amount of work that was a little more than $14,000, but included a hydrostatic test and a 10 year warranty. That made the first proposal smell very fishy, as that ballparks the quote to about $10,000, discounts included (about $500 per foot of excavation then a rougly 10% discount on $11,000), and notably none of these discounts were given to me in writing.After the second company actually came out to look, it was determined that I only really needed to worry about $8600 of work. It's taken longer, but I already have felt more comfortable, especially since it was revealed that the repairs Roto-Rooter had done before were shoddy! During excavation, the previously replaced pipe segment literally fell away from its fittings. It didn't seem primed or sealed properly, and wasn't even anchored to the foundation in any way.I readily admit that I am not an expert, but I've done small PVC repair - I've fixed three different water main breaks myself, so I know how much excavation sucks, and basically what goes into fitting pipes. That's another reason the original work frustrates me so much.To say this leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the work I paid for last year is generous. While I don't *want* to have to pay for repairs, that's just the facts, and I am always willing to pay fairly for hard work. I am decidedly *un*happy to have to pay to fix the same problem twice in less than a year because the first repair failed very quickly in a way that it really shouldn't have.Edited Thursday, July 3rd, 2025:My plumbing has been repaired, and during this process, it turns out that none of the pipes were primed or sealed properly, because the second company I called managed to pull the pipes off by hand.Additionally, I don't remember an engineer or inspector ever being contacted, at least from the city. I don't know if they have internal inspectors who are qualified to inspect connections to municipal sewer lines (though I doubt this would have passed anyway), but things finished up quick enough that I'm unsure. I am currently awaiting a city inspector to come check the work before they backfill.I've added additional photos of the pipes.Edited Monday, July 7th, 2025:I received the response from the owner five days ago, asking me to reach out via email with my information. I sent a response the same day, and have not even received confirmation that the email has been received. I'm doubtful that I will even receive a response at this point, and am quite certain that the response was generated by an AI to simply make it look like the business is responding to me.They are not, at least by these means.
